Protect Your Accounts From Hackers
With hackers breaking into our social accounts every day, it’s time to tighten up your security if you haven’t done so already. Here’s what you can do to make it less likely for hackers to strip you of your own page rights.
Two-Factor Authentication
Multi-layer authentication means that more than one form of identification is needed to access a system. Face recognition, numeric codes, backup codes, voice or text message verification, authenticator apps and security keys are all used fof identification in multi-layer authentication. Two-factor authentication uses two forms of identification to grant access into a program. Most likely you will get an email or text message with a code that has to be entered in addition to your login information. Make a point to be sure you have this set up on all of your accounts, even beyond social media.
Here are the steps to get it done on Instagram:
Tap Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication
On TikTok it’s called 2-step verification. Make sure you have that turned on under your Security & permissions.
Most, if not all, platforms are going to have the option to set up two-factor authentication. This PCMag article, Two-Factor Authentication: Who Has It and How to Set It Up is a good resource for preventing hackers on almost two dozen apps from Amazon to LastPass to Yahoo.
Manage Passwords
It’s easier than we think for hackers to steal our passwords, especially if we’re using the same password on multiple platforms. To protect your accounts, you should be using unique passwords and changing them frequently.
There are management systems like DashLane and LastPass that help secure your passwords and online payment information, plus give you easier access to your information when you need it.
